The diminutive Nicole Richie certainly turned heads when she arrived at Golden Slipper race day on Saturday. A racing newbie, she scored a couple wins but some of her fashion choices loped a little off-course.
The 33-year-old fashion designer, reality TV celebrity and wife of Joel Madden wore a very short velvet and chiffon zebra flocked $5000 Balmain frock as the international ambassador for the Autumn Racing Carnival.
The drape, shoulder line and sleeve of the dress were warm and elegant but the colour was borderline boring and the zebra print teamed with the midget length felt like it belonged at Studio 54.
The vintage velvet headpiece was the topliner of the ensemble. It was perfect and unique.
Richie wore a pair of barely there sandals, highlighting her rosary, anklet tattoo. Too scant, too strappy for Autumn.
Richie was quoted saying “Toni Maticevski and Kym Ellery were her favourite Australian designers for race days”, and that “this year’s trackside trends are mid to full length hemlines and closed toed shoes”. I think she should have closed that spiel with “Take my advice, because I’m not using it anyway.”
A few days earlier Nicole Richie was photographed in a gorgeously stylish Maticevski skirt and The Row bustier that would have looked amazing with the vintage hat and a velvet cape. And usually Richie looks effortlessly stylish. What happened?
Richie judged the Fashions On The Field competition alongside former Home And Away star Jodi Anasta.
The crafty contestants included one entrant who made her own bustle because she had heard “the bum was in”. Regina Thai, took the $18,000 first prize with a ladylike grey ASOS lace capped sleeve dress and black vintage, wide-brimmed hat.
Not one to leave a scene without controversy, Richie made a quick exit just before she was slated to present the Golden Slipper trophy to the winner, Gai Waterhouse, with a source believing the Hollywood star’s minders whisked her away over concerns about the stage due to overcrowding. However, according to event organisers, she was unable to present the trophy ‘due to timings and additional commitments’.
