As I start outfit planning for the Spring Racing season, I can hear my feet plead for sensible choices, like my mother before the Year 12 formal. The leg lengthening (but bone crushing) stiletto towers that makes every outfit just that little bit better? The solid high block heel that eliminates the sinking feeling as you take a grassy view at the finish line (but still leaves arch ache at the end of the day)?
Here’s an out there suggestion, that has my tootsies jumping for joy. The big summer trend on the runways this Spring is dad shoes.
Forget mum jeans; fashion has now reached peak dad. From Instagram to the runway, celebrities and designers are embracing the “ugliness” of oversize sneakers that many have referred to as “dad shoes”.
Dad shoes got their name thanks to their retro appearance. Most look like they’ve come straight out of your father’s ’80s wardrobe. With thick soles and an overall chunky look, which screams comfort over chic.
Last August, the Adidas Yeezy Wave Runner 700 was released, which started the “dad” look. This move influenced designer labels such as Balenciaga to make high-end versions with the Triple S Trainers being their best-selling shoe. Celebrities and fashion influencers are also fans of bulky buys from Gucci with the Rhyton sneaker and Louis Vuitton, which offers the bulky Archlight sneaker.
Mixing dresses with chunky, even ‘ugly’ sneakers, makes a fashion statement. It says, ‘Don’t assume I am weak and all girly.’ It also says, ‘There is more to me than meets the eye.’
Jaden Smith wore a pair of Louis Vuitton’s Archlight sneakers to the Met Gala in May.
Street style favorites Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Hailey Baldwin have also been seen rocking the look. Will you dare to buck the trend and #freeyourfeet this Spring Racing season? If the fashionistas in Paris can do it, you can too! #feettoo
